Bring your herd, flock, or pack to the Santa Barbara Zoo!
Are you looking for a wild field trip or group experience? The outdoor learning experience at the Santa Barbara Zoo complements your in-class lessons or study project while your students get first-hand knowledge of the natural world. Enhance your trip with a giraffe feeding, train ride, animal encounter, or a visit to our animal kitchen. See more information about these options below.
We look forward to seeing your school or group!
How to Make a Group Reservation
Early reservations are recommended as a limited number of groups are admitted each day. Reservations are booked in the order in which they are received and must be submitted to the Zoo at least two weeks prior to your requested visit date.
Confirmations will be sent via email. If you do not receive your confirmation within one week of sending in your reservation, please contact Guest Services by email or phone: (805) 962-5339, ext. 124.
You can also download a hard copy reservation form, fill it out completely (including your email address and fax number), and fax it to (805) 730-9250 at least two weeks prior to your visit.
Field Trip Options
Add one or more of these options to make it a field trip they won’t forget.
These age-appropriate, hands-on activities, and animal encounters enhance any field trip!
Animal Senses This exploration of animals’ special senses is 45 minutes long and filled with activities that challenge students’ relatively limited senses of smell and hearing. An encounter with a “creepy crawly” animal is included in this program.
Fantastic Giraffes This 45-minute program is an interactive overview of giraffe anatomy and conservation efforts. No animal encounter; we suggest pairing with Giraffe Feeding!
Inside Scoop This animal-diet focused program lasts 45 minutes and includes a tour of the animal kitchen, a hands-on study of mammal dentition, and a bird beak morphology activity. No animal encounter; we suggest pairing with Barnyard Feeding!
Cost: $3/person. This encounter is for a maximum of 25 students due to limited space in the animal kitchen.
Get up close to the Zoo’s tallest residents when you feed the giraffes by hand. Zoo educators will answer your questions about giraffes and ensure that your students become giraffe experts!
Four different lunch selections are available for your group, and your order can be picked up at a pre-arranged time from the Ridley-Tree house Restaurant. Zoo lunches must be ordered in advance; please see menu and order form for more information.
Don’t miss a ride on the Zoo Train! Each round trip takes about 10-12 minutes and provides a peek at behind-the-scenes areas, as well as a new perspective on many of your favorite animal exhibits.
Train rides must be scheduled at the front gate upon your arrival; no advance scheduling is available. Certain events such as rain, maintenance, or unforeseen situations may affect train availability.
Cost: $3/person. Children under 2 ride free.
