Name:  American Alligator

Range:
Southeastern United States; concentrated in Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana.

Habitat:
Pond or open water.

Description:
The fourth tooth of the lower jaw fits into laterally closed pit in the upper jaw, while the fourth tooth of the upper jaw is best developed; fingers and toes are joined by webbing at the base; females average 8 ft. long and males 12 ft.; back is covered with rectangular horny plates, belly is smoother.

Diet:
Juvenile alligators eat insects, shrimp, tadpoles and frogs. As they mature they eat small fish or snakes. As adults, they eat almost anything, including small mammals, fish, crustaceans, insects, birds, snakes
