Name: Bleeding Heart Pigeon
Range: Philipine Islands.
Habitat: Rainforests.
Description: They have a prominent red patch on the white breast and are grayish over the rest of the body and head. The brightly-colored red feathers on the breast resemble a wound, hence their name. These feathers differ structurally from their other feathers--they are almost hair-like. The central part of the patch of color is slightly hollowed with adds to the "wound" appearance.
Adaptations/Habitat: They find their food mostly on the ground and occasionally perch on a bush or tree. If disturbed, they immediately take to the wing, but soon return to the ground. If necessary they will escape by running. During the breeding display, the male pursues the female with short rapid steps, then stops suddenly, lowers his tail and puffs out his breast to show off his red patch. He then resumes a normal posture and begins to coo.
Breeding/Growth:
Diet: They eat seeds, berries, new shoots and invertebrates.
Exhibit: Patio Aviary
