    Bequests
This may be the easiest way to make a future gift to the Zoo. Simply ask your attorney to draft a new will for you or add a codicil to your existing will. (Sample language for your gift to the Zoo can be found below.)

    Charitable Gift Annuity
A charitable gift annuity is a contract between you and the Santa Barbara Foundation (acting as 'agent' for the Santa Barbara Zoo.) A gift annuity pays a fixed income for life to you and your spouse, or a person you designate to be the beneficiary. A portion of the income received is tax-free. Gift annuities can be set up so that you receive present income or deferred income. Upon the death of the beneficiary the Zoo receives the balance of the principal as a gift. The minimum amount of a gift annuity is $10,000.

    Charitable Remainder Trusts
A charitable remainder annuity trust pays a fixed income based on a percentage of the initial contribution. When the trust matures the remainder goes to the Zoo.

A charitable remainder unitrust pays a variable income based on the value of the trust each year. The payout rate is determined when the trust is established. When the trust matures the remainder goes to the Zoo.

    Charitable Lead Trusts
This type of trust pays income to the Zoo for a specified number of years and returns the asset to the donor when the trust matures.

    Testamentary Trusts
Your attorney can include a variety of trusts in your estate plan that will provide benefits for your family and your favorite charities, including the Santa Barbara Zoo. Contact your estate planners to discuss trusts that provide you with excellent tax benefits and help you make a generous gift to the Zoo.

    Real Estate
Appreciated property is an excellent asset to be used as a charitable gift to the Zoo. Contact us about gifts of real estate that may help you avoid high capital gains taxes.

    Life Insurance Policies
Paid-up, or partially paid-up, policies may be donated to the Zoo. Or, you may purchase a new policy in which the Zoo is the sole owner and the beneficiary.

    Wills or Living Trusts
Below are language examples to use when writing a will or living trust that includes a gift to the Zoo:

    Bequest for Unrestricted Support
"I hereby give to the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, a not-for-profit California corporation located in Santa Barbara, California, (the sum of $_________) / ( ____ percent of my estate) / (the following property) / (the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate). The principal and income to be used in such manner as its board of directors deems best to carry out its work and effect its purposes."

    Bequest for Restricted Gifts
"I hereby give to the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, a not-for-profit California corporation located in Santa Barbara, California, (the sum of $_________) / ( ____ percent of my estate) / (the following property) / (the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate). The principal and income to be used for the specific purpose ____________ (describe the purpose such as the Zoo's Endowment Fund, etc.)."

    Memorial Bequest
"I hereby give to the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, a not-for-profit California corporation located in Santa Barbara, California, (the sum of $_________) / ( ____ percent of my estate) / (the following property) / (the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate) to be known as 'The __________________ Memorial Fund'. The principal and income to be used in such manner as its board of directors deems best to carry out its work and effect its purposes (or describe the specific purpose, if desired)."

The preparation of wills and trusts needs an attorney's professional training. These examples are shown as a public service to provide accurate information of a general nature only. For your specific circumstances, professional legal and tax advice should always be sought.
