Asian Small-Clawed Otter Pups Born at the Santa Barbara Zoo May 21

Second Litter Joins Parents and First Litter on Exhibit

from press release

  • Six 14-week old Asian small-clawed otter pups
  • Second litter born at the Zoo in the past year
  • Part of Cooperative Breeding Program of Association of Zoos and Aquariums
  • Species Threatened in Native Habitat by Development, Pollution and Hunting

(Santa Barbara, CA, August 17, 2011)

See the otter pups as they go on view to the public for the first time, along with their parents and older siblings (now nearly one year of age).
Born May 21, the new pups have been kept by their parents in a den behind the scenes
until they grew in their waterproof fur, were old enough to safely swim and
began to eat solid food. The first litter joined in the care of the new pups as training
for future breeding.

The pups may not be on view at all times, depending on their sleeping and feeding
schedules. Their exhibit’s three-foot deep pool has been sectioned off for the new
pups’ safety and will reopen when they are mature enough to dive.

The breeding pair, named Jillian and Bob by sponsors Peter and Pieter Crawford - van Meeuwen, arrived in January and March 2010, respectively. This is their second turn as parents, and they were paired as part of a cooperative breeding program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Jillian is one year and ten months old and was born at the Bronx Zoo. Bob, aged three years and six months, came from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Name the Pups

The new otter pups are all looking for naming sponsors. What an "otterly" unique gift idea for the loved ones in your life! The naming sponsorship for the entire litter of six is available for $15,000, or individual otters may be named for $5,000 each.
