Humboldt Penguin

Spheniscus humboldti

Average Lifespan: Up to 30 years.


Diet: Fish (at the Zoo: herring, anchovies, day smelt, night smelt, and capelin) and squid.


Geography: Coasts of Chile and Peru.

Babies: Can mate all year round and lay 2 eggs at a time. Incubation period is about 40 days.  


Conservation Status: Not Endangered.


Interesting Fact: Unlike their Antarctic relatives, these penguins live in a warm environment.

Boys or girls? You can tell the difference between the two because the males wear the armbands on the right side and females wear the armband on the left side. 


Lucky is our youngest, born 4/15/10; Flipper is the oldest, born 6/12/90.
The penguins at the Zoo weigh about 9 lbs.
