How To Start Volunteering - Adults
Not sure if you are ready for a big commitment? No problem! Our short-term volunteers assist with the Zoo’s special events. There is no yearly time commitment and you don't need to attend an informational meeting.
Step 1: Apply Online
Go to Adult Volunteer Application.
Step 2: Sign Up for an Informational Meeting
Once we receive and process your application, you will receive an email with instructions on how you can sign up for one-hour informational meeting. Informational meetings are held twice in February, June, and October.
Step 3: Interview
Following the informational meeting, interested volunteers will need to schedule an interview with the Volunteer office.
Step 4: Submit Tuition
Once accepted, volunteers are asked to pay an $80 tuition fee that covers training and uniform. As long as the volunteer maintains 50 service hours a year, they are not required to pay the tuition again.
*Administrative/Clerical and Grounds Keeping aides are not required to pay the $80 tuition, however, the volunteer benefits do not apply to their accrued service hours.
**Financial assistance is available for volunteers experiencing financial hardship.
Step 5: Training
Long-term adult volunteers must attend a one-day new volunteer training before volunteering at the Zoo. Additional training classes are required for certain opportunities. Details about the training system are explained at the informational meeting.
Some special events require a specific orientation in order to volunteer.
