Condor Viewing

7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.condorhead

By 1982, the California condor teetered on the brink of extinction;  only 22 birds remained in the world. The last wild California condor, AC-9, was captured at Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge in 1987.  Following an unprecedented multi-agency captive breeding and reintroduction effort, the condor is well on its way to recovery with more than 200 flying free.  Join us in a rare opportunity to see free-flying California condors at either Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge or Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge. You may even see AC-9 and his offspring!

The number of vehicles is limited in order to minimize potential disturbance to breeding and nesting condors, so please RSVP to reserve your spot. This trip is limited to conference participants and is weather-dependent. Vehicle travel will take up to 1.5-2 hours each way. Up to one hour of this travel will take place on winding dirt roads. Please meet at The Fess Parker a DoubleTree Resort by Hilton at 7:00 a.m., dressed in layers, wearing closed-toe walking shoes or hiking boots, and toting your binoculars and/or spotting scopes! We will return to Santa Barbara at approximately 5:00 p.m.
