Q: I am a member of the press. How do I arrange a visit?

A: If you are actively working on a story, the Zoo will waive your admission fee. Contact our Director of Public Relations, Julia McHugh, via email or phone: (805) 569-3303. Alternatively, contact our Director of Marketing. Dean Noble via email or phone: (805) 962-5339, ext. 116.

Q: I need to interview someone for a story. Who do I call?

Q: I’m working on a print/video story. Do you have any photographs or video I can use?

A: We have a variety of visuals for use by press. Please email Julia McHugh, Director of Public Relations or email Dean Noble, Director of Marketing.

Q: I’d like to shoot a commercial video/television project at the Zoo. Is there a fee?

Q: I am a student working on a school project. Can I get a tour of the zoo or talk to a keeper?

A: We appreciate your interest in the Zoo! Due to the high number of requests, we can only make tours and staff available for professional press. But please feel free to make use of the information on this website for your project.

Q: I am a photography student and want to come take photos of animals. Can I do that?

A: Only photographers on professional assignment are allowed free admission, but students may take photos of the animals for project use only; for resale or professional uses, please see our Filming Guidelines. Students must pay admission, unless you are a student at the Brooks Institute, your instructor may have day passes available; please contact them directly to inquire.

Location Filming/Photography 

Movie crew in gorilla exhibitThe Santa Barbara Zoo offers the opportunity to use the Zoo facilities and images of its animals for advertising, film and video productions, artistic renderings, books, consumer products and stock photography. As a nonprofit corporation, the Santa Barbara Zoo relies on monies for efforts such as these to continue its mission of wildlife conservation and education as well as for animal enrichment and exhibit improvements.

With its wide range of rare and endangered animals and beautiful gardens, the Santa Barbara Zoo provides an ideal backdrop for video productions, still photography and artistic renderings.

Policy Overview

Location Fees
Location fees are set depending upon a variety of factors, such as the nature and purpose of the project, its intended market, its potential promotional value to the Zoo, the potential disruption to the Zoo, the extent to which the Zoo is required to support the project, and the extent to which the rights to the final product are shared with the Zoo.

Advance Notice
At least two weeks' notice is required whenever possible.

Movie crew near giraffesScript Review
We reserve the right to review the script for all scenes featuring the Zoo in order to ensure consistency with our mission and image.

Use of Film and Photographs
The production company may use film and photographs shot at the Zoo only for the specific purpose stated in the Location Agreement. Under no circumstances may the production company use film and photographs shot at the Santa Barbara Zoo in a manner inconsistent with the Zoo's mission and image or in a defamatory, untrue or censorable nature, and the company shall cease any such use upon demand by the Zoo.
