Two New Dinosaurs Join Duncan for an All-New Show, "Dino Doc"dinodoc lily

“Dino Doc” performances are scheduled on weekends at 12:00 & 3:00 p.m.

Free with Zoo admission. Held outdoors on the Rolling Hill Stage.

Shows are canceled in the event of rain, since dinosaurs don't like to get wet!

A 16-foot long duckbill (parasaurolophus) that sneezes and an adorable hand-held “baby” triceratops join Duncan, the Zoo’s popular T. Rex, in a new stage show called “Dino Doc,” starting Saturday, May 11.

The duckbill has been named Lily by the Duncan Family, and the baby tri was recently named Tulip by Liz Wilson of Santa Barbara in a contest sponsored by KEYT NewsChannel 3.

During the family-friendly 15-minute lively presentation, the human hosts introduce all three dinosaurs and show how veterinarians treat the Zoo’s animal residents. Children from the audience assist in exams for the dinosaurs, which were developed with the help of the Zoo’s veterinary care team.

Lily the duckbill has a surprise in store: she sneezes (water is used to simulate a dinosaur-sized sneeze). Maybe she has a cold? The young volunteers from the audience listen to the dinosaurs’ heartbeats, check their eyes and ears, and do other exams. After each show, the dinosaurs spend a few minutes at the edge of the stage for photographs.

Both of the new dinosaurs were designed and hand-built by the Chiodo Bros., the Hollywood “creature shop” that also created Duncan. The Zoo’s dinosaurs are sponsored by the Duncan family.

Performances are held at the outdoor Rolling Hill Theatre and are free with Zoo admission. Audience seating is on a grassy hillside and there is no reserved seating.

Creation of the New Zoo Dinosaurs

The Chiodo Bros. Productions, Inc. did an amazing job in bringing dinosaurs to life at the Santa Barbara Zoo! Check out this video by Stan Winston School of Character Arts that describes the entire creation process. We love our new dinos!
