Job Title: Veterinary Technician

Schedule: Sunday-Thursday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM, some exceptions may apply based on business necessity.

Description: Under general direction of the staff veterinarian, the veterinary technician assists the veterinarian in all aspects of health care for the animal collection, including the coordination of quarantine care. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the veterinary team with preventative health procedures and emergency care, maintaining the hospital and other animal care areas in sanitary condition, administrative duties including ordering supplies, data entry and record keeping, guest relations, and general zoo team involvement.
Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Completion of an accredited veterinary technician program and a minimum of 2 years paid veterinary technician/assistant experience preferably with non-domestic and exotic animals in a zoo or similar facility, or in a veterinary hospital, or any equivalent combination of education or experience. Registered veterinary technician (RVT) certification in California, or eligibility to obtain licensing in CA at time of employment is required. Applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a positive attitude to work successfully in our collaborative environment.
Compensation: This is a non-exempt, full time, regular position, wages range from $20-24/hour.


Job Title: Education Programs Instructor (5 Part Time Positions)
Schedule: Flexible schedule up to 25 hours a week, including nights and week-ends
Description: Do you enjoy creating memorable experiences for others? Would you enjoy sharing your passion for animals with the general public? Are you looking for a unique and fulfilling part-time job? If so, we want you as part of our education team! Programs Instructors facilitate a variety of educational experiences within the Zoo, including the Zoo Safari overnight program, the giraffe feeding deck, school programs, and more. Responsibilities include leading a wide variety of program activities while ensuring the safety of our guests and animals.
Requirements: Applicants must be minimum 18 years of age and available all weekends, holiday, and at least 1 weekday per week. Successful applicants will be responsible, outgoing, fun-loving team players with a positive attitude and experience working with children. Some college coursework in education, science, or related fields is preferred. Must have the ability to work outdoors, access all areas of the facility and negotiate the zoo work environment. Applicants must complete a DOJ background check and be First Aid and CPR certified prior to beginning work.
Compensation: $10/hour


Job Title: Camp Counselor (Part-Time, Seasonal)
Schedule: Summer Camp: June 16-August 22 (Monday-Friday) between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (approx. 6-hour shift).

Training Dates (Mandatory) Summer Zoo Camp
Before camp starts:
Saturday, May 31 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 7 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Sunday, June 8 from  1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
During camp:
Friday, July 4 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Description: Do you love kids? Do you love animals? Are you interested in teaching kids about animals? If so, we want you as part of our Zoo Camp team! Zoo Camp counselors are responsible for ensuring a safe, fun Zoo Camp experience for groups of up to 13 campers, while leading them in games, songs, crafts, and hands-on science activities. Campers range in age from 3 to 12 y.o.
Requirements: Applicants must be minimum 18 years of age (if between 13-17, please check CIT opportunities), attend all training days, and work at least 9 of the 10 camp weeks in the summer between the hours indicated. Successful applicants will be outgoing, responsible, fun-loving team players with a positive attitude and experience working with children. Some college coursework in education, science, or related fields is preferred. Must have the ability to work outdoors, access all areas of the facility and negotiate the zoo work environment. Applicants must complete a DOJ background check and be first aid and CPR certified prior to beginning camp.

Job Title: Climbing Wall Monitor (Part-Time)
Schedule: Must be available weekends and weekdays, any time between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Some holidays, school breaks, and some evenings for scheduled events.
Description:  Would you enjoy educating guests about conservation efforts?  Are you outgoing, adventurous, enthusiastic, and enjoy being around people? Do you have a passion for rock climbing and working outdoors? Under general direction of the Director of Guest Services, the Climbing Wall Monitor facilitates an educational, positive, safe, fun, and easy rock climbing experience. The Climbing Wall Monitor will use “Climbing for Condors” climbing wall to  help educate our guests on what it takes to save California condors in the wild. Tell the condors' great adventure over the last 30 years, and inspire guests to help.
Requirements: Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age, and have an outgoing personality with a professional and positive attitude. Rock climbing, cash handling, and customer service experience is a must! Applicants must have the ability to climb the rock wall as needed throughout the shifts. Must be able to stand/walk for up to two continuous hours and access all areas of the facility. Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, school breaks, and some evenings when events are scheduled.
Compensation: $9.50 - $10.00/hour, DOE
Job Title:  Volunteer Coordinator or Volunteer Manager (Full-Time)
Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. some holidays, and some evenings when events, orientations or trainings are scheduled.
Description: We are seeking a self-motivated and energetic team player with leadership qualities and creative thinking to join our team to develop and manage volunteer programs and volunteer leadership. Recruit and screen volunteers, organize orientations and training sessions, direct and monitor daily activities of volunteers, assess programs, participate in continuing education training, conduct presentations onsite and offsite with local community organizations, high schools and colleges, participate in special events and field trips.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with outstanding interpersonal skills are required for the numerous aspects of this position, promoting the Zoo and its mission through planning, developing, administration, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the Zoo's volunteer programs, working with all departments at the Zoo as well as our local community. 
RequirementsPreferably, the successful candidate has a B.F., B.A. or B.S. Life Sciences, Education, Psychology, Communications or Human Resources, with min. 1 year experience in a professional environment working with youth and/or adult volunteers in a recreational or educational setting or in personnel management. Must be self motivated, customer services oriented, and thrive in a very dynamic environment. Must have strong communication, public speaking andorganizational skills, as well as the ability to handle conflict resolution in a professional manner with diverse audiences,  working in a busy shared space work environment. Must have a warm and amiable personality to establish and maintain strong rapport and positive relationships with volunteers, staff and guests. Must be able to remain flexible in fast paced environment while effectively juggling multiple priorities. Attention to detail and ability to multi-task successfully, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and make effective use of time, as well as the ability to work week-ends and events. Experience in thematic interpretation desirable, as well as an interest in the use of technology. Experience working with Volgistics and Volunteer Administration Certification a plus! Must have a valid CA driver's license with excellent driving record, First Aid & CPR certifications and successful completion of DOJ background check.

Job Title: Guest Service Operations Coordinator (Full-Time)
Description: Do you have high energy and a passion for serving customers? Are you a person who is organized, detail-oriented, and loves working outdoors in a fun, challenging environment? If so, the Guest Service Operations Coordinator may be the position for you.

Under the direction of the Director of Guest Services, the Guest Service Operations Coordinator is responsible for providing administrative support for the Guest Service Department by working with the Guest Experience Specialist program, team, and its directors. This includes enforcing and improving customer service standards; encouraging staff to achieve high customer service goals; booking, scheduling, tracking, and coordinating birthday parties and group reservations; as well as, coordinating and executing assignments of the Guest Services Department during special or private events. The Guest Service Operations Coordinator is also responsible for scheduling staff and responding to guest and colleague inquiries in a timely manner.
Requirements: Must have a positive, energetic, outgoing personality in addition to a strong sense of team work. Must exel at time management and have successful interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, high level of professionalism, and be detail-oriented. Must have strong communication and leadership skills. Must excel at reading and writing comprehension, critical thinking, analytics, active listening, self and subordinate monitoring, active learning, exceptional judgment and decision making. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, with ability to type minimum of 45 WPM and to work in a shared office environment with interruptions. 2 years of supervisory and sales experience is preferred. Schedule will include occasional week ends, holidays and evenings for scheduled events.

Compensation: $14.00/hour 


Job Title: Train Engineer (Part-Time)

Schedule: Weekdays, weekends, holidays, and some evenings, usually between hours of 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Description: Do you like trains and working outdoors? Are you a storyteller who enjoys educating and interacting with the public? Under general direction of the Director of Guest Services, the Train Engineer facilitates a positive, safe, and excellent guest experience. Train Engineer must also carry out the Zoo's mission by helping connect guests with animals through education and guest interactions. 

Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age, self-motivated and have a positive attitude. Basic knowledge of hand tools, mechanical maintenance are necessary, as well as an outgoing and friendly personality, great communication skills and capability to multi-task. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally, climb stairs or ladders, and manipulate basic tools of the job. Must be comfortable approaching guests and initiating conversation. Must be available to work some week days, weekends, holidays, evenings, and during the Santa Barbara Zoo’s busy seasons.  

Compensation: $9.00-10.00/hour, DOE  


Job Title: Guest Experience Specialist, a.k.a. GES (Part-Time)

Schedule:  Week ends and week days, any time between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Some holidays, school breaks, and some evenings for scheduled events.

Description: Are you interested in helping our conservation efforts? Does helping others make your day? Do you like the outdoors and working with children and their families? Do you feel comfortable and excited in engaging in conversations with guests? Under general direction of the Director of Guest Services, Director of Retail Operations or Director of Food Services, Guest Experience Specialist facilitates a positive guest experience by providing excellent service to all visiting the Santa Barbara Zoo. 

Requirements: Applicants must be minimum 14 years of age (Work permit required for 17 and under, unless graduated from high school). Outgoing personality with positive attitude required. Customer Service and Cash Handling experience a must! Applicant must be able to stand/walk for up to two continuous hours and access all areas of the facility. Must be able to work week days, some week-ends, holidays, school breaks, and some evenings when events are scheduled.

Compensation: $9.00/hour  


Job Title: Show Actor (Part-Time)

Schedule: School breaks, Weekends, Holidays and Scheduled Events.

Description: Under the general direction of the Director of Marketing, Show Actor will perform on stage as part of the cast of our show "Dino Doc". The stage show is a behind-the-scenes look at how the experts at the Santa Barbara Zoo care for animals. The show runs twice daily for up to 20 minutes on the Zoo's Rolling Hill Stage. Show Actor accompanies Character Performers during show and meet and greet, ensuring safety and show quality, assisting guests with requests, answering guests questions and other guest service related jobs as needed.

Requirements: Must be at least 16 years of age. Outgoing personality with positive attitude required. Will represent the Santa Barbara Zoo's wholesome, family-friendly brand on stage before large numbers of people and on occasionaal appearances in the community. Must be comfortable approaching guests and initiating conversations. Applicant must be willing to undergo acting training and rehearsal , and follow instructions from Director. Must be able to stand/walk for up to two continuous hours and access all aras of the facility. Previous stage experience through theater, music or dance is a plus!

Compensation: $10.00/hour  


Job Title: Dino Actor (Part-Time)

Schedule: Every weekend and holidays, special events, any time between 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Description: Can you bring a roaring, chomping, blinking, running, growling Dinosaur back to life? Do you want to delight over 200,000 people in a terrific new stage show this year? The Dino Actor will perform on stage as part of the cast of our new show "Dino Doc." The stage show is a behind the scenes look at how the experts at the Santa Barbara Zoo care for animals, and will run up to three times daily for up to 20-minutes on the Rolling Hill Stage. The actor will perform inside an amazing, one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art dinosaur costume designed by a world-class Hollywood special effects studio.

Requirements: Must be at least 17 years old. T-Rex costume requires applicant to be at least 5'10" in height and able to carry a 75-pound backpack device for at least 20 minutes at a time. Applicant must be comfortable with tight spaces and wearing such a costume. Stage, dance, gymnastic and/or athletic experience a plus! Outgoing personality with positive attitude and excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Must be willing to undergo acting training and rehearsal, and follow instructions from Director. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, and manipulate basic tools.
